New Tricks are a four-piece Rhythm & Blues band, based in Nottingham. We play a mix of British and American blues and R&B.
(And by R&B, I mean proper, old fashioned Rhythm & Blues, not modern "R&B" that whining love child of Hip Hop and elevator music!! Grrr, snort, grumble, spit, fume, - don't get me started, "Nurse, the screens, he's off again...")

Like half the bands in Nottingham, New Tricks evolved from partnerships formed at Colin Staples Wednesday blues jam at The Running Horse (R.I.P.), in the good old days when Barry Middleton ran the place. We can’t thank Colin and Barry enough for their contribution to blues in Nottingham…

New Tricks have been playing pubs, clubs, blues and beer festivals around the east mids since 2007 but, as you can see from the photo, we have quite a high mileage on our respective clocks…Dave and Tony have been playing in blues and rock bands around Nottingham for years (oh alright, decades then…). Rob is a recent arrival from the North East and Tombs is a Goth, who joined the band by mistake, but he’s such a good bass player that we won’t let him leave…

What do we sound like? Well, we can do no better than quote from a review of one of our gigs, published in Blues in Britain magazine.
New Tricks “…deliver a canny mix of well-known material (plenty of Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac and Chicago tunes) but performed with enough freshness and originality to avoid the sound-alike trap… neither quality nor entertainment dipped for a moment and I can thoroughly recommend New Tricks for a good old-fashioned knees-up!”

Band members are:

Dave – Lead Guitar/Sound-Recording Engineer
Likes : Blues, computers, "hard country" (whatever that is ...), PA systems, Newcastle Brown Ale
Dislikes : Almost everything else…

Rob –Guitar/Lead Vocals
Likes : Pies, old guitars and motorbikes, blues, “old stuff”, twangy country songs...
Dislikes : “modern stuff”

The Reverend J.J. Tombs – Bass/Vocals
Likes : Bats, coffins, gargoyles, Jack Daniels, six or seven string basses, metal...
Dislikes : Sunlight, mirrors, four string basses, twangy country songs...

Please note: The Reverend Tombs has recently been mistaken for the Archbishop of Canterbury.
This is incorrect. He is, in fact, the Archimandrite of Netherfield and Chaplain to the Nottingham order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
Any female fans who would like him to administer the "laying on of hands" should accompany him to his van in the car park...
